2020-2021 Welcome Letter

Congratulations on a successful audition! We are excited to welcome you to our 2020-2021 competitive teams! We are incredibly excited to be kicking off the season, and are looking forward to a great 10th season of competitive dance. Please read below for important start-up details.

Summer Technique

With fall on the horizon, we want to begin to cautiously and carefully transition our dancers back into their routine. Therefore, we will be holding 4 weeks of summer technique class to start slowly rebuilding stamina and growing skills. These classes will take place the weeks of 8/3, 8/10, 8/24, and 8/31. In accordance with Executive Order 2020-160, summer technique will be held outdoors at the studio. Dancers should wear weather-appropriate work-out attire, tennis shoes or rehearsal dance shoes that fully cover their feet, pack ample water, hand sanitizer, and a mask. We know that many of you expressed a desire for summer technique to happen online on your audition application, and therefore our summer technique classes will be live-streamed for those dancers who would be more comfortable attending virtually. For returning team members, summer technique is included with your June tuition payment. For new team members, the cost of $85 is due the first day of classes. Class is required for all Full Company (including first-step members) and open to Part-Time Company members as well. Summer technique will take place:

Wednesdays @ 5:30 - 7:30 P.M.

Summer Team Camp

One of our favorite parts of the summer is our annual intensive! Intensive is a great time for our dancers to connect with their teammates and new instructors, expand their movement vocabulary, and experience new styles and approaches to dance. Over the years, we’ve done immersive ballet-focused intensives, choreography-based intensives, and comprehensive intensives. This year, our camp will be a blend of those, with some fun new additions! As with summer technique, class will take place outdoors with a virtual option for those interested. Intensive is required for all Full Company and First-Step members, and open to Part-Time Company members as well. Cost is $125, and camp will take place:

August 17th - 21st  @  4:00 - 7:00 P.M.

Warm-Up Orders

New members to the SDC Team will need to purchase their warm-up uniform. This includes jacket, tote bag, and team makeup for girls. The total for these items is $250.00 for girls, $180.00 for boys. Orders will be due by September 30th, 2020. An order form will be available on the Parent Portal section of our website the first week of September.

Fall Class Placements/Fall Registration Form

We are in the process of using the answers to your audition applications, as well as the answers to the below survey for returning members, to compile a fall schedule for both technique classes and competition routines that makes sense for our dancers, our families, and also gives us the best chance at being able to run in-person classes safely, effectively, and legally. This year, in lieu of our traditional start-up packets, your child’s fall schedule, along with a fall registration form and a policies/procedures handout, will be available on the Parent Portal section of our website by midnight on 8/7. Completed Registration forms will be due by 8/17.

Parent Meetings

There’s no denying that the start of our 10th season looked a little different that we could have ever imagined. We know that many of you may have questions about what the season will look like. Therefore, all parents of our competitive dancers will have the option to sign-up for an individualized, virtual meeting with our staff to ask any questions you may have about the program, the plan, the season, etc.  The sign-up will be posted on the Parent Portal section of our website by midnight on 8/7. Looking forward to seeing you and connecting!

Returning Full Company Members: Please Read and Respond by 8/5

Firstly, we want you all to know that we have thought long and hard about how best to approach this unconventional season. To say that this is unprecedented in our industry is an absolute understatement. However, we as teachers have dedicated our lives to our student’s dance education, and in spite of adversity, will continue to work tirelessly to craft solutions to allow our dancers to continue doing what they love. There was much to take into consideration as we planned, including:

  • Parent Investment (money already spent on last year’s costumes/competitions/rehearsals)

  • Dancer Investment (countless hours our students spent perfecting last season’s routines)

  • Logistics (teacher availability, ability for student’s to fit into last season’s costumes, ability to replace costumes when necessary, restaging, studio space and availability, amount of prep time required, dancers adding to the team from multiple programs, etc.)

  • Parent Financing (keeping the season affordable for parents, especially in this time of economic uncertainty)

  • Dancer Growth (continuing to ensure that our dancers are gaining in their skills so that they maintain their current trajectory of improvement)

  • Time Commitment (minimizing extra weekends for additional competitions)

  • The Unknown (As you can imagine, this has been the most challenging aspect of planning, but that hasn’t stopped us from trying to account for it!)

We also reached out to you as parents and dancers to get your input on how you wished to approach the transition from last season into this one. On your audition applications, the majority of you (80%) said that in addition to last year’s ballet pieces, you wished to compete between 2-4 of our 2019 group routines ONLY in the spring of 2020 (although 88% of you wish to compete last year’s solo/duo/trio in the fall). After much deliberation, and taking into account all of the above in combination with your audition applications, we have arrived at the following:

PLAN A

Compete the following dances at (1 or 2) fall regional competitions:

  • Category Is: RuPaul

  • Me, Luck Be a Lady, Hustle

  • Uptown Girl, Rhythm Is A Dancer, Hey Ya, Change

  • Wonder Woman

  • Any 2019 solo/duo/trio who desires this path

  • The remaining competition fees from these numbers will be deducted from comp fees associated with new dances.

Compete last season’s ballet dances at (1) fall competition and (2) of our spring competitions

Compete the following dances at (3) of our spring regional competitions:

  • Nascar, Service Please, Friend Like Me

  • Stuff Like That There, Another Day in the Sun

  • Don’t Fence Me In, Ghosts

All team members will begin learning a NEW jazz, tap, and production in the fall, to be competed at our (3) spring competitions, as well as 1-3 additional NEW group routines for those dancers who expressed interest. Regular weekly rehearsal times for 2019 dances will be shorter than those for new dances, and are covered by our $299 monthly tuition, as is rehearsal time for the new jazz, tap, and production.

PLAN A is contingent upon our ability to compete in the fall. Should that not be a possibility due to state law, venue closures, etc., we will move to PLAN B. There is no difference in cost between PLAN A and PLAN B. The only difference is the time of year that our 2019 dances will compete:

PLAN B

Compete the following dances at (2) of our regional spring competitions:

  • Category Is: RuPaul

  • Me, Luck Be a Lady, Hustle

  • Uptown Girl, Rhythm Is A Dancer, Hey Ya, Change

  • Wonder Woman

  • Any 2019 solo/duo/trio who desires this path

  • The remaining competition fees from these numbers will be deducted from comp fees associated with new dances.

Compete the following dances at (3) of our spring regional competitions:

  • Last season’s ballet dances

  • Nascar, Service Please, Friend Like Me

  • Stuff Like That There, Another Day in the Sun

  • Don’t Fence Me In, Ghosts

  • NEW jazz, tap, production, and any new additional groups/trios/duos/solos

Armed with that knowledge, we are asking for your input one additional time: If your dancer marked that they wanted between 4-7 NEW routines this season, please indicate which styles you would prefer those new dances to be below and return this form to summer technique by Wednesday, August 5th.

DANCER SURVEY

Dancers and Parents of returning Full Company members: please complete this form and return it to the studio on by Wednesday, August 5th. If you can not return it in person, please e-mail it to company@spartandancecenter.com. If you do not return this form by that date, your instructors will determine which styles of dance you are placed in for you.
