Hair & Makeup

Makeup

The purpose of stage makeup is to allow the judges and the audience to see your child’s facial features, facial expressions, and consequently performance under the bright stage lights!

What Makeup is needed:

  • Full coverage foundation (that matches skin well)

  • Lightweight powder

  • Bright pink blush (MAC Dollymix or similar)

  • Duo eyelash adhesive

  • Fake eyelashes

  • MAC “Stars and Rockets” Eyeshadow

  • Matte (no sparkle or shimmer) white eyeshadow

  • Matte (no sparkle or shimmer) black eyeshadow

  • Black liquid or gel eyeliner

  • Black mascara

Stage Makeup Instructions:

  • Apply a dab of foundation or eyeshadow base to the eyelids (helps eyeshadow to stick & last through day)

  • Heavily apply white eyeshadow underneath the eyebrow, stopping before you reach the actual eyelid

  • Apply white eyeshadow to the inside corner of the eye (near the tear duct)

  • Apply purple eyeshadow to the entire lid area.  Put purple on heavy for the stage!

  • Blend black eyeshadow into the crease of the eye. Blend so that it’s heaviest in the outside corner and gets lighter as it gets closer to the inside. (Think sideways V shape)

  • Hold the fake lashes up to the dancer’s eye to measure and make sure that it fits the eye properly.  * TIP: Eyelashes may need to be trimmed.

  • Apply a bit of Duo eyelash adhesive onto the fake lash.  Give it about 30 seconds to get tacky.

  1. Once the glue is tacky, place the lash as close to your dancer’s natural lash line as possible, without gluing the lash to their real eyelashes. You don’t want to see a gap between the fake lashes and the real lashes.  * TIP: It works well to have the dancer look down while applying the fake lashes.

  • Apply black eyeliner along the top lash line, extending slightly out and up past the edge of the eye.

  • Softly blend the black eyeshadow along the lower lashline

  • Apply mascara to the bottom lashes, and top lashes if necessary

  • Clean up any black or purple eyeshadow that may have fallen underneath the eyes (you’d be surprised how much is there!

  • Apply a foundation that matches your child’s skin to the rest of the face. Remember- the foundation serves a purpose besides evening skin tone- it gives the rest of the makeup something to stick to so it stays put throughout a long dance of dance and bright, hot lights

  • Apply powder to minimize shine/sweat

  • Starting at the apples of the cheeks, apply blush; blending up towards the ears.  (Visible but not overdone)

  • Older dancers may wish to also contour under the cheekbones and around the temples with bronzer.

  • Crisply apply lip pencil at edges of the lip and fill in the outside portion of the lip

  • Lastly, apply lipstick over the whole lip.
